Updates
January 24, 2000 - I actually added some new stuff this
time. Surprise surprise! ;-) I updated my
story, with a little more about my experiences over the past several
months. A neat activity to try is the Soundtrack
to Recovery. I know I love to listen to mine. And
please, send me your song submissions, and I'll get them up on the page!
There are new reasons to love your body - keep
them coming! They're so encouraging to me, and I hope they are for
you, too. I have a few more updates in mind, but I wanted to
get these out there for everyone. Take care!
As women, we are
bombarded by conflicting messages about our bodies. We are expected
to go to any lengths to shape and mold ourselves to fit the ideal, which
seems to change weekly. We know we must be more than our weight,
more than a pair of legs and a smile. Still, we feel defined by our bodies, yet somehow, disconnected
from them. This isn't surprising. Our bodies are divided into pieces
and judged, and that judgment is extended to our entire person.
Through this site, I hope to explore
how women's body images are developed, and experiment with ways to
bring the body and soul into harmony with each other.
Who Is This Girl, Anyway?
A little about me...I'm a 21-year-old junior at
the University of Alabama, studying advertising and somehow making it
through the Computer Based Honors Program in one piece. I love
reading, writing, singing, music, and anything Irish or Celtic (hence
the cute little butterfly!) I've also become very
interested in learning about different forms of spirituality. I'm 5'10", blue
eyes, and I like candlelight dinners and long walks on the...oops, sorry.
;-)
I'm also in recovery from anorexia and
bulimia, self-injury, and depression. I won't say that it's
easy; in fact, true recovery is proving to be one of the rockiest
paths I've ever walked. But I am finally starting to believe
that it is worth it! For the first time, I am beginning to see
my body for what it really is: a part of me. It does not define
me, yet it is not separate from me either. Its value is not in
its appearance, but in how it helps me live my life. I still
have a long way to go. Recovery is an ongoing process, and for
me, creating this site is a part of it. It is providing
continual reminders of all the things I've learned over the past
several months.
I hope this will be a safe place of support, learning and fun.
