I normally don't recommend specific merchants, but I recently became an
affiliate with Hazelden Transition Books
Transitions is
physically located in Chicago, and I went there several times while I was
living at home. It is a beautiful place, very inspiring and
relaxing. I liked knowing my money was going to such a positive
business. If you're looking for something new to read, stop by their
site and have a look around.
Adams Miller, Caroline. My Name Is
Caroline
An interesting account of a 12-step recovery from bulimia.
Brumberg, Joan Jacobs. The Body Project: An
Intimate History of American Girls
This book explains how women have responded to their maturation over time Brumberg uses diaries of young women dating back to the turn of the century to look at menstruation with its increasingly early onset, slimming, obsession with body parts like breasts and thighs, and virginity.
Claude-Pierre, Peggy The Secret Language of Eating Disorders
This book chronicles the beginnings of Claude-Pierre’s experience in eating disorders, with the illnesses of both of her daughters, and her view on the cause of eating disorders. Claude-Pierre believes that the "negative mind" is behind anorexia and bulimia, continually telling the victim that he or she is not worthy of food, care, or love. She asserts that these feelings begin in childhood, and slowly eat away at the healthy person. Her approach is one of unconditional love and acceptance, and caring for the victim 24 hours a day, taking the pressure off of the patient. The book lays out her five steps in treating eating disorders, and includes stories of Montreux patients.
Cooke, Kaz Real Gorgeous: The Truth about Body & Beauty
Hysterical book about true beauty. Everyone should read this!!
Edut, Ophira Adios, Barbie
This book is a collection of interesting essays from young women who are comfortable with and proud of the fact that they bear little resemblance to a Barbie doll.
Fraser, Laura Losing It
I love this book!! Gurze catalogs describes it well: "Veteran journalist, reformed dieter, and recovering bulimic, Laura Fraser offers an eye-opening, entertaining look at how the multibillion-dollar diet industry makes false promises in exchange for huge profits. She exposes diet scams, commercial and diet gurus, fat-free and fake foods, and the "inner corset." Based on interviews with more than 70 respected authorities working in the eating disorders, obesity, and weight management fields."
Hanauer, Cathi My Sister's Bones
Billie Weinstein musters the courage to confront her parents' denial about her sister's struggle with anorexia. (Fiction)
Hornbacher, Marya Wasted: A Memoir of Anorexia and Bulimia
Sometimes a little too intense, but shows just how horrible an eating disorder can be.
Levenkron, Steven The Best Little Girl in the World
Probably the best known book about anorexia. (Fiction)
Pipher, Mary Reviving Ophelia: Saving the Selves
of Adolescent Girls
This bestseller explains why more American girls fall prey to depression, eating disorders, addictions, and suicide attempts than ever before.
Shelley, Rosemary Anorexics on Anorexia
Several anorexics at various stages of recovery talk about their illness. I found this one interesting because no two cases were alike; it got beyond the stereotypes.
Wolf, Naomi The Beauty Myth
The original feminist treatise on the politics of appearance.
